RegionsPokerStars to enter Ontario market
Published: February 25, 2025
PokerStars, a prominent online poker room, is preparing to enter the most populous Canadian province once the gaming market launches. It is paving the way to start its activities in Ontario when the jurisdiction opens in April 2025.
Ontario established AGCO (The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario) to regulate cannabis retail stores, alcohol, gaming and horse-racing activities.
Moreover, the province founded iGO (iGaming Ontario) in July 2025, assigned to manage and conduct industry offerings in Ontario. Pokerfuse has recently reported PokerStars looks to penetrate the prospective regulated online market, offering attractive games.
Ontario players have previously accessed PokerStars open market, but they need to re-enter the province now. The global poker room wants to provide a different platform to its players.
Interestingly, this is the first occasion PokerStars has confirmed its collaboration with competent bodies to debut in Ontario. A PokerStars spokesperson declared that licensing in Ontario represents a historic moment for the company.
Furthermore, it was officially confirmed they collaborated with iGO and AGCO concerning regulatory processes. The spokesperson stated the attractive offering was in store for Ontario players.
Opening a legalized market would significantly decrease the black market operator share while enhancing player protection. The players will likely start enjoying online poker within a separate market, playing only with other poker enthusiasts from the province.
This practice is not unusual when it comes to online poker. MSIGA allows players from Delaware, Nevada and New Jersey to enjoy themselves together via WSOP and 888.
Additionally, PokerStars has closed markets in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Italy and India. Multiple high-roller tournaments with massive prizes are in store, even if the market closes, given the province has 15 million inhabitants.
PokerStars considers Canada a vital jurisdiction, given it was born there twenty years ago.
