Sticky and Non-Sticky Bonuses: What Happens to Your Own Money
Two welcome bonuses can have the same match and the same wagering, yet one lets you withdraw an early win from your deposit and the other locks it in

A wagering requirement tells you how much must be staked. The game contribution table, usually further down the terms, decides how much of each bet actually counts. At a low weighting the real turnover can be ten or twenty times the headline figure.
Bonus terms are usually summarised as a single multiple, such as 35x. That figure is only half the calculation. The other half is the game contribution table, also called game weighting, which says what share of each bet counts toward that multiple. Two players accepting the same bonus can face very different amounts of real play depending on which games they choose.
This guide explains what weighting is, why operators use it, how it changes the C$ arithmetic, and how to read a contribution table before opting in. Online casino play is for adults of legal age in their province (18 or 19).
A wagering requirement is expressed in dollars that must be "wagered". Game weighting converts the dollars you actually stake into the dollars that count. If a game is weighted at 100%, a C$1 bet counts as C$1. If it is weighted at 10%, the same C$1 bet counts as C$0.10. At 0%, it counts for nothing, and the game may be excluded altogether while the bonus is active.
The UK Gambling Commission's response to its autumn 2023 consultation gives a respondent's example: a bonus might carry a 10x wagering requirement on all slots but be weighted at 50% for blackjack and 30% for roulette, so each pound wagered on roulette contributes 30 pence. In Canadian terms, a C$1 roulette bet at 30% moves your wagering progress by C$0.30.
Games differ in their house edge and in how predictable results are. Without weighting, a player could clear a wagering requirement on a low-edge game, or by placing bets that almost cancel each other out, at very little expected cost. The Gambling Commission recorded that licensees add weightings primarily to strike a balance between customer engagement and limiting their exposure to financial risk.
Regulators have looked at the practice without banning it. In 2017 the Gambling Commission relayed Competition and Markets Authority concerns that promotion-specific play restrictions, explicitly including weighted wagering requirements and maximum bet sizes, were not always set out clearly and could lead to confiscation of deposits and winnings. When the Commission later capped bonus wagering in Great Britain at 10 times from 19 January 2026, it said it did not think it was necessary to review the rules on weightings at that time, while acknowledging concerns about them. Canada has no equivalent national rule; in Ontario, the AGCO's Standard 2.06 requires material bonus conditions to be disclosed at the offer's first presentation, with the rest no more than one click away.
There is no standard table; each operator sets its own. One industry guide to game weighting describes the general pattern as follows, while stressing that every casino sets its own terms:
| Game type | Contribution described as common |
|---|---|
| Slots | Usually 100% |
| Roulette | Often 10% to 50%, sometimes excluded on even-money bets |
| Blackjack | Commonly 5% to 20% |
| Video poker | Varies widely, from 0% to 20% |
| Live dealer games | Frequently low or excluded entirely |
The same guide notes that some casinos exclude certain high-RTP slots from bonus play entirely, and others cap how much of the wagering can be completed on a single title. Treat these as patterns to look for, not as figures to expect: the only numbers that apply are in the terms of the offer you accept.
Take an illustrative offer: a C$100 bonus with a 35x wagering requirement on the bonus amount. The wagering requirement is C$3,500. The real amount you must stake is the requirement divided by the weighting of the game you play.
| Weighting | Real turnover needed | Spins or hands at C$2 |
|---|---|---|
| 100% | C$3,500 | 1,750 |
| 50% | C$7,000 | 3,500 |
| 30% | C$11,667 | 5,834 |
| 20% | C$17,500 | 8,750 |
| 10% | C$35,000 | 17,500 |
| 5% | C$70,000 | 35,000 |
| 0% | Cannot be completed | None count |
The point is not only time. Every dollar of real turnover carries the game's house edge. To keep the arithmetic simple, assume a game that returns 99% of stakes (a 1% house edge), a figure chosen only for illustration. On C$35,000 of turnover at 10% weighting, the expected cost is C$350, three and a half times the C$100 bonus. The same requirement cleared at 100% on a slot returning 96% costs C$140 in expectation (C$3,500 × 4%). A game with a lower house edge can therefore be the more expensive way to clear a bonus once weighting is applied.
For the full method of pricing a bonus, including deposit-plus-bonus requirements, see our guide to wagering requirement maths in C$. For how RTP settings change the slot side of the calculation, see RTP, volatility and hit frequency.
Most players do not stick to one game. Progress is simply the sum of each bet multiplied by its weighting. Suppose, under the same C$3,500 requirement, you stake C$1,500 on slots at 100% and C$2,000 on blackjack at 10%:
The progress bar shows less than half, even though you have staked the headline amount. Many players only discover the weighting at this point.
Weighting is not limited to the welcome bonus. Winnings from free spins are often credited as bonus money with their own wagering requirement, and the same contribution table then decides how quickly they can be released. Reload offers and some cashback paid as bonus funds work the same way. If the cashback is paid as cash, there is no playthrough and weighting does not apply at all, which is why the form of payment matters as much as the percentage.
Before comparing offers, note for each one whether the reward arrives as cash or as bonus funds, what multiple applies, and which table governs it. Two offers with identical headline multiples can differ several times over in real turnover once the table is applied to the games you actually play.
A 0% game is not always harmless. Some terms treat play on excluded games while a bonus is active as a breach that allows the bonus and winnings to be removed, in the same way as exceeding a stake cap. The UK Gambling Commission's fair-terms guidance says that if winnings are withheld for a breach of play restrictions, the customer must be given a full explanation including the specific terms breached. If you want to play blackjack or live tables freely, it can be simpler to decline the bonus or choose a no-wagering offer, and read our blackjack guide on its own terms.
Weighting turns one headline figure into many: the real turnover depends on which games you play, and at 10% a C$3,500 requirement becomes C$35,000 of bets. Find the contribution table and the excluded list before opting in, divide the requirement by the weighting of the games you actually intend to play, and judge the offer on that number.
Only a tenth of each bet counts toward the wagering requirement. A C$10 blackjack hand at 10% moves your progress by C$1, so a C$3,500 requirement needs C$35,000 of real bets on that game.
Commonly, but not always. Some offers exclude named slots, often high-RTP titles, or jackpot and bonus-buy games. Check the excluded list in the terms.
Some terms treat it as a breach that allows the bonus and winnings to be removed, not just as play that does not count. Read the excluded-games clause before you switch games.
The UK Gambling Commission capped wagering at 10 times from 19 January 2026 but said it did not need to review weighting rules at that time. In Ontario, AGCO Standard 2.06 requires material bonus conditions to be disclosed up front.

Canada has no national online casino. Each province runs or contracts its own site, and since July 2026 two provinces also license private operators.

A withheld withdrawal or a voided bonus is not settled by shouting in live chat. Every licence comes with its own complaint ladder and its own clock.
