Montreal Casino Croupiers Protest Negotiation Deadlock
Croupiers working at the Montreal Casinos walked off their job last weekend. They wanted to express their solidarity as the ongoing negotiations couldn’t seem to find any solution.
The casino’s dealers made their demands at 4 pm and left the premises to demonstrate in front of the Notre Dame Island casino. The surprise strike on Saturday lasted for four hours.
The principal reason for the labour strike is the impasse in the current collective-bargaining negotiations over the casino dealers’ employment contracts. According to the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), the discussions are in a stalemate and haven’t been resumed since they broke down more than a week ago.

The main goal is to find a solution to the collective agreement that, up to March 31, regulated the working conditions of the Montreal Casino croupiers. At this moment, salaries and schedules are among the most critical issues.
Although the strike was scheduled to last until 8 pm, all gaming tables remained open except the poker room. According to Loto-Quebec, the poker room was only closed temporarily.
Although no timeframe was mentioned, the provincial Crown Company, which manages all casinos in Quebec, wants to resume talks with the union as soon as possible.
Commenting on the situation, Jean-Pierre Proulx, the representative for the casino dealer union, said:
Things went well today despite the heavy rain. It’s mostly to demonstrate against our work hours. [And] our working conditions. Contract talks will resume Tuesday with a mediator.
