Ontario Officially Launches Online Gambling Market
Published: April 6, 2025
On April 4, Ontario launched the new iGaming market, becoming the first Canadian province to regulate online gambling. The launch comes after nearly three years of preparations.
The provincial government initially announced its plans to end the lottery’s monopoly in April 2019, and the following year, it adopted legislation necessary for establishing a licensing regime.
The final set of online betting and gaming rules was introduced in September, banning autoplay and setting a minimum slot spin speed of 2.5 seconds.
iGaming Ontario was tasked with regulating the market and issuing licenses to operators willing to do business in the country’s most populous province.
The list of brands that have received regulatory approval includes renowned names such as PointsBet, Rivalry, theSCore, Rush Street Interactive, FanDuel, 888 Casino, Bet365, Inspired Entertainment, High 5 Games, and Play ‘n Go.
All approved businesses were required to cease any activities in Ontario before the launch or risk their application being revoked.
PointsBet was one of the first operators to go live on April 4 through its PointsBet Canada subsidiary.
FanDuel Group, owned by Flutter Entertainment, announced it would accept bets from the first day. The operator will offer both online gambling and sports betting to customers in Ontario.
High 5 Games confirmed its selection of online slots and casino games is ready to go live with several operators on April 4.
Canada legalized single-game sports betting last year, although the industry didn’t fully launch until Monday. According to PointsBet, it took only fifty seconds to get the first big bet.
On Monday, a bettor placed a $500 two-leg parlay on North Carolina against Kansas in the NCAA final and Toronto Maple Leafs over the Tampa Bay Lightning.
According to available information, sixteen online casinos are up and running in the province. More real money casinos have registered with the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario but are still waiting for an agreement with iGaming Ontario.
