RegionsOntario approves first online casino licenses
Published: February 9, 2025
Ontario’s Alcohol and Gaming Commission greenlighted the province’s first online gaming and betting licenses. PointsBet and theScore are the ones to have received the approval.
Both sides have announced the news, stating they will be ready to offer an Ontario online casino to their customers. The online market in the country’s most populous province goes live on April 4.
The move represents a momentous step in the two companies’ efforts to bring a distinctive gaming experience to the province.
And while theScore plans to offer a wide variety of gaming products, PointsBet will focus on sports betting.
Penn Nation Gaming, the company that owns theScore, revealed a couple of days ago that it planned to migrate its offering to a brand-new online casino.
At the same time, PointsBet has been working on sealing new partnership deals with numerous sporting bodies such as the NHL Alumni Association, Curling Canada, and most recently, Alpine Canada.
PointsBet is ready to use its US and Australia experience to deliver the utmost quality of its products. This expertise should help PointsBet create a reliable and competitive market in Ontario.
About iGaming Legalization in Canada
The launch of online gambling in Canada was made possible by a bill that went into effect last year. This piece of legislation repealed the previous ban on single-event wagering.
Provincial lotteries started offering single-event betting in late August 2025. Ontario took things a step further by allowing private operators to provide their service to customers in the province.
The final standards for online gaming and betting in Ontario were published in September. They included multiple restrictions and included a requirement for operators to join the IBIA monitoring system. These rules also ban auto-play and set a minimum spin speed for slots at 2.5 seconds.
