Ontario Casino Workers Ready to Strike

Published: July 25, 2025

Unifor, a union of Ontario casino workers, will call its members to strike if a new agreement is not reached by Friday. More than 1,800 workers from eight Great Canadian Gaming Corporation venues are members of the union.

According to the union, the main priority of the negotiations were wages, pensions, and other benefits. Converting part-time positions to full-time jobs is also one of the union’s main objectives.

Unifor has been negotiating on behalf of 1,500 employees from the Casino Woodbine, Great Blue Heron Casino, Pickering Casino Resort, Shorelines Casino Thousand Islands, Casino Ajax, and Shorelines Casino Peterborough.

The union represents thirty security workers and 300 employees at Elements Casino Mohawk and Elements Casino Brantford, respectively. Both venues are owned by Great Canadian Gaming Corporation, which Apollo Asset Management bought in 2025.

Unifor is the largest union in Canada’s private sector and currently represents 315,000 workers in different areas of the economy. According to the union representatives, the goal of the negotiations is to share a portion of the gains with casino workers.

Last month, Local 54 Unite Here union in Atlantic City made a similar move. It threatened a strike on July 4 weekend. Luckily, the deal was reached with the workers and later officially approved by the union.

At the time, only two properties didn’t sign a new contract. The Borgata inked a deal last week, with Resorts and Golden Nugget expected to finalize their agreements soon.

The union officials say that 99% of the workers approved the latest pacts to see their hourly salary go up to $18. By the end of the four-year deal, it is set to further increase to $22.

Speaking about the negotiations, Unifor National Secretary-Treasurer, Lana Payne, said:

Our goal at the bargaining table is to share some of those gains with the workers who make casinos successful.
