RegionsSports Bettors in Ontario Love NBA
Published: June 9, 2025
Single-game sports betting has been available in Ontario for nearly two months, with some trends already emerging.
According to a poll, over a third of Ontarians wager on sports at least once a week. And while 35% of the province’s residents enjoy sports betting, 39% don’t take.
25% of the participants make at least three bets on a daily basis. Around 70% say they won at least $1, while 18% claim their wins were between $51 and $100 on a single bet.
Basketball (NBA) is the favourite sport of Ontario bettors (28%), followed by ice hockey (NHL) at 22%. The survey showed that 13% of bettors placed their wagers on the NFL. However, the way Ontario players spend their money could change soon with the upcoming start of the Canadian Football League (CFL).
Bettting site Bet365 is the preferred online casino for bettors in Ontario, with 18% picking the UK-based operators over the other.
The main reason for this is that the company established its footprint in the province earlier as a gray market operator. BetMGM follows at 17%, FanDuel at 11%, Caesars Sportsbook and PointsBet at 8% and 7%, respectively.
Bet365, theScore Bet and FanDuel took an early lead in casino app downloads. theScore was expected to become one of the leading names in the provincial market due to its strong province in Ontario and throughout the country.
theScore is owned by Penn National Gaming, while FanDuel, the largest online sportsbook in the States, is owned by Flutter Entertainment.
About Ontario Gambling
The legal online gambling market in Ontario was launched on April 4, 2025. The launch came after nearly three years of preparation. The provincial authorities announced the end of the lottery’s monopoly in April 2019, while the licensing regime legislation was introduced in 2020.
The province posted its online betting and gaming standards in September 2025, banning autoplay and setting the minimum spin speed for slots at 2.5 seconds.
iGaming Ontario, the subsidiary of the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO), has been tasked with regulating the market and awarding licences to Ontario online casinos.
