The Winner of the Mega Millions Jackpot Can Remain Anonymous
Published: August 8, 2025
The lucky person, or persons, who won the Mega Millions jackpot on July 29 can opt to stay anonymous, as Illinois is one of the states allowing lottery winners to keep their identity from the public.
The winning ticket was bought in a convenience store in Des Plaines. According to the Illinois Lottery, the winner can ask for legal advice and assistance before scheduling an appointment to draw the jackpot.
Many Americans are now waiting to find out more about the person who matched all six numbers. However, there’s a chance they won’t learn the winner’s identity. The state’s lottery allows all winners of $250,000 (or more) to remain anonymous. They must inform the lottery about their decision before claiming the prize.
Many other states allow lottery winners to keep their confidentiality, such as Arizona, Kansas, Maryland, Delaware, North Dakota, South Dakota, Ohio, Minnesota, Virginia, and Texas. The remaining 34 states, as well as DC and the US Virgin Islands, require all winners to be revealed.
The recent $1.337 billion win represents the largest prize in the history of the lottery in Illinois. It’s also a hefty win for the Speedway in Des Plaines, where the winning ticket was sold. Mega Millions awards a 1% commission of up to half a million to authorized retailers.
But that’s not all, as another Illinois player claimed a $1 million Mega Millions win. The store in Berkely will be paid a $10,000 cash bonus.
Apart from the jackpot, Mega Millions players from Illinois claimed over $2.5 million. Almost 400,000 tickets from the Prairie State won some kind of prize during the July 29 draw.
The Mega Millions main prize has been reset to around $20 million, which means many players will turn their attention to Powerball, whose jackpot has reached a staggering $187 million! The last Powerball jackpot was awarded in late June when a lucky player claimed a $366.7 million prize.
