Online Poker Ontario Shows Promising Results
Published: August 7, 2025
Online poker has been showing excellent performance in Ontario’s gambling market. Although the provincial regulations allow for Ontario-only pools, the market has significantly grown over the last couple of years. The three available poker operators, PokerStars, 888, and BetMGM, have over 400 users on average over the previous seven days.
PokerStars was the most visited site, closely followed by BetMGM, while 888 was far behind.
Ontario’s average number of poker players exceeds Pennsylvania and Michigan, despite the absence of WSOP from the provincial market. On the other hand, 888 doesn’t offer its services to players in the two US states.
The increased popularity of online poker in Ontario shouldn’t come as a surprise, especially as its population is 14.5 million.
PokerStars and 888 have been present in Canada even before the launch of the provincial online gambling market. They also managed to transition a fair share of customers over to the newly-regulated market.
We should point out that the latest numbers represent a positive sign for online poker in Ontario, mainly as the market was launched less than four months ago. Also, the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario’s decision to allow players to play only within the province could have impacted the situation much more negatively.
This AGCO’s move forced a number of operators to leave the market. These rules also slowed down the growth of daily fantasy sports in Ontario.
PokerStars leads the market in Ontario with 200 concurrent seats. BetMGM is closely behind with186, while 888Poker is at 37. BetMGM and 888 were already present in Ontario when the market launched in April.
PokerStars joined in on the fun on June 28, but it didn’t take long for the operator to catch up. The Ontario Platinum Series played a vital part, as it offered a guaranteed prize pool of $1.5 million!
Earlier this year, the operator announced it had partnered with FanDuel on a Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment deal. Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment is a company that owns several Canadian sports franchises, including Maple Leafs, Raptors, and Toronto FC.
