Rise of Samurai Megaways Review
Samurai were in equal measure historical figures and legends in Japan. Their skills as warriors shaped the island’s history, leaving behind many exaggerated stories about their exploits. Pragmatic Play leans into this to create Rise of Samurai Megaways.
The online slot retains all the key elements from the original Rise of Samurai while incorporating the Megaways system. Does the change improve the game? Read on to find out!
- High variance with a 5,000x maximum win
- Pay extra to double your odds of activating a bonus
- Megaways and tumbling reels make for a fun combination
The call to arms has sounded, and countless talented soldiers are ready to answer. Samurai flock to the cherry blossom field from all across Japan to test their blades against one another.
The visuals do a great job of showing off various samurai and the beautiful land that will become their battleground.
Available special features include the tumble mechanic, free spins with multipliers, buying free spins, and the improved Ante bet. If you combine these bonuses with high variance, you could win up to 5,000x your total stake.
Theme, Graphics and Sounds
An attractive release needs two things. First, you need a good theme. Second, you need a team of skilled artists to bring it to life. Pragmatic Play has both, and the results speak for themselves.
The background image is incredible! Much of this is owed to the top-tier animations. Cherry blossom trees falling down, wind pushing clouds and wind chimes, and an occasional butterfly fluttering by.
Oh, and did we mention the background image changes when the free spins begin?
You play on a six-reel board. The height of the six reels changes with every spin, owing to the Megaways system. This also changes the number of available ways to win for each round, up to 200,704 ways to win.
Land at least three identical symbols in adjacent positions to form a winning combination. Wins must start with the leftmost reel. Otherwise, the associated cash prize will not be awarded.
In-game features
Eagle-eyed players will no doubt have noticed an extra column on the playing field.
The column is positioned above reels two, three, four, and five. It acts as an extension of these reels, and gives you more opportunities to form winning combinations.
Wins that contain a Wild in them are subject to a 2x multiplier increasing their cash prize.
This effect occurs during normal gameplay and free spins. You only get one 2x multiplier increase, even if multiple Wilds are part of the winning combination.
After every spin, wins are paid, and winning icons are removed from the board. Existing symbols will then fall down to take their place.
Meanwhile, brand new icons will appear from the top of the screen. If Lady Luck smiles your way, you could score several consecutive wins for the price of a single spin.
The extra reel is also affected by tumbles. There, new symbols appear from the right. Tumbles continue until no new winning combinations are possible.
Players can choose to increase the price of their wager by 25% to double their chances of winning free spins. The bonus does this by increasing the number of Scatters that appear on the playing field.
Rise of Samurai Megaways Free Spins
Land three or more Scatters in any position to win the free spins round. Scatters also grant a cash prize, up to 100x for six Scatters.
The number of Scatters does not change how many free spins you win. Instead, that is determined randomly using a wheel of fortune.
The wheel spins, awarding a random combination of free spins and multipliers. Win multipliers apply to the total win of every free spin.
You can retrigger the special feature by landing three or more Scatters again. Retriggering the bonus spins the wheel of fortune again.
It awards a random number of free spins. It also grants a random multiplier, which is added to the current multiplier value. There is no limit to how many times the special feature can be retriggered.
Players can also choose to buy free spins rather than triggering them manually. Buying free spins costs 100x your total stake. You cannot buy free spins if you enable the increased ante bet earlier.

RTP, bet sizes and volatility
The RTP for Rise of Samurai Megaways is 95.7% during normal gameplay. The RTP is slightly lower with the Ante bet enabled, sitting at 95.69%.
However, buying free spins directly offers the lowest RTP of all, which is 95.54%. All three are below the current slot average, which sits at 96%.
You can bet between $0.20 and $125 on each spin. Without the increased ante bet, your maximum bet per spin is $100.
The game has a high variance, which means scoring meaningful wins is rather difficult.
However, we still consider the volatility worth it if you can afford it. After all, you could win up to 5,000x your total stake with a little bit of luck.
