Sabres and Swords Charge Review
The best toys are ones that allow you to use your imagination in all kinds of unexpected ways. A car with a battery you can drive around is exciting, but it is rather one-dimensional. By contrast, a set of toy soldiers allows us to imagine countless conflicts and experiences.
Yggdrasil taps into the fond memories of our toys for their latest online slot, called Sabres and Swords Charge. Will this title be everything we were imagining? Will it succeed at being even better than expected? Read on to find out.
- High variance with a 2,880x jackpot
- 50 fixed paylines
- Available special features include Gigablox and free spins
Our troops have marched for days. Now, the time for battle draws near. Soon, soldiers on both sides will charge at each other in hopes of winning the battle. If we want to ensure our victory, we need the best bonuses on our side.
Fortunately, the developer lined us up with a few reliable weapons. Gigablox makes a return, as do free spins. With these two bonuses combined, you can win up to 2,880x your total stake. A solid payout and one that is tuned appropriately to the high variance this game offers.
Theme, Graphics and Sounds
We quite like the design approach Yggdrasil has taken with this release. The background displays a detailed battlefield, complete with billowing smoke rising from the ground.
However, all we see on the reels are toy soldiers. While the board displays reality, the background captures what such battles looked like in our heads. It is a delightful combination and one that is enhanced further by the team’s talented artists.
You play Sabres and Swords Charge on a six-reel, six-row board with fifty fixed paylines. This means we cannot turn individual paylines on or off to lower our total bet any further.
Wins are awarded by finding at least three identical symbols next to one another. Winning combinations must follow an active payline and start with the leftmost reel. If all of these conditions are met, casino members will receive the appropriate cash prize.
In-game features
Gigablox can appear at any point during both normal gameplay and free spins. Gigablox icons range in size from 2×2 to 6×6, giving you an increased opportunity to land big wins.
Gigablox can also drastically change up the layout of the reels, which keeps things from getting stale. All standard symbols and Scatters can appear as Gigablox. You are guaranteed to draw at least one on every spin.
Sabres and Swords Charge Free Spins
Players must find at least five Scatters to activate the free spins bonus. Each triggering Scatter awards one free spin. Scatters are calculated based on block size.
For example, a 2×2 block is worth four Scatters. During free spins, players can collect Scatters to remove icons from the board and to win extra turns.
Symbol removals and additional free spins swap with every three collected Scatters. Three Scatters will remove one symbol, and then six collected Scatters add three free spins.
Nine Scatters will then remove another icon. This sequence continues, provided you keep drawing additional Scatters quickly enough. The last prize you can win is three additional free spins for collecting forty-eight Scatters.
Each free spins round awards a multiplier to the largest Gigablox icon. If there are two Gigablox of the same size, the multiplier is awarded to the leftmost one.
The granted multiplier changes depending on the size of the Gigablox symbol. A 2×2 Gigablox will have a 2x multiplier, while a 6×6 Gigablox will feature a 6x multiplier.
Finally, players have the option to buy free spins instead of waiting for them to trigger manually. Buying free spins costs 100x your total bet.

RTP, bet sizes and volatility
The RTP for this game is 96.11%. This is better than the current industry average, which sits at 96%.
You can bet between $0.25 and $75 on each spin. Players can win a top prize worth 2,880x their total wager in this release.
We feel this is a fair payout, given Sabres and Swords Charge has a high variance. Jackpot hunters may want to try a slot with a bigger top prize. Just remember those games have even higher volatility than this one does.

Verdict
Yggdrasil set out to capture what it felt like to play with toy soldiers as kids. On that front, they undoubtedly succeeded. Sabres and Swords Charge has a gorgeous background, excellent animations and a fun, entertaining theme.
However, that is just one part of what makes it exciting. The special features it offers also played a crucial role in making us come back to this slot so often.
We rate the game 4 out of 5 stars. A fantastic experience and one well worth your time.
