Scroll of Dead Review
Play’n GO was not the first one to come up with the Book of gameplay. However, there is no denying they were the ones to benefit the most from it.
Following the success of Book of Dead, the developers has produced many follow-ups. Most of them set in Egypt and following the same gameplay loop.
Can Scroll of Dead break free from the mold, or is it yet another Book of Dead clone?
- High volatility with 7500x jackpot
- Unlockable sixth reel
- ‘Book of’ gameplay with new additions
Most trips to ancient Egypt lead players somewhere warm and sunny. However, that is not the case with this online slot. Instead, we are led below ground.
Here, in the grand but abandoned hall lies as much treasure as one could want. Be vary of the high volatility that protects such a 7500x jackpot.
Fortunately, the developers have left us ways to overcome those difficulties. They come in the form of free spins with expanding symbols, an unlockable sixth reel and an optional gamble round.
Theme, Graphics and Sounds
As our introduction shows, not everything about this game follows what you would expect an ancient Egyptian theme.
Do not worry, though. Play’n GO have not gotten rid of all our favourites! For example, icon designs still feature scarabs, ankhs, Ra statues and pharaohs.
The animations are also top notch, but that is to be expected from this software provider. We also like how the background image changes during free spins. Hats off to the artists, they have made one gorgeous release.
You play Scroll of Dead on a six-reel, three-row board. However, keep in mind that the sixth reel will be locked away most of the time.
The slot has ten flexible paylines, allowing players to toggle them off to decrease their total stake.
Wins are granted by finding at least three identical symbols in adjacent positions, starting with the leftmost reel. All wins must follow an active payline, or their cash prize will not be awarded.
In-game features
Other than the free spins round there aren’t that many features.
Scroll of Dead Free Spins
Three, four or five Wild-Scarabs will unlock eight free spins. The number of Scatters does not change how many free spins you get.
However, it does increase the initial cash prize you win. During free spins, the sixth reel will activate and will remain visible until the bonus ends.
One icon is chosen randomly to become the expanding symbol. Selected icons will cover all positions on the reels they cover if it will result in a winning combination.
Furthermore, they can win money even if they are not adjacent to one another. Wilds do not substitute for expanded symbols.
After a win, you are given the option to Gamble. You can collect your existing win, or choose to risk it in a bonus game.
You will be taken to a separate screen, where players are tasked with guessing the facedown card. You need to guess either its colour or its suit.
Predicting the right colour increases your reward by 2x. Correctly guessing the suit (heart, spade, club, diamond) awards a 4x prize increase. One wrong guess means you lose everything.
Gamble can be played five times in total. The bonus also stops early if you win up to 2500x. You can also end the gamble early by pressing the Collect button.

RTP, bet sizes and volatility
This Play’n GO release comes with a 96.28% RTP, which is slightly above the current industry average of 96%.
However, that number can be much lower for certain markets. We advise double-checking the RTP with your online casino before playing.
You can bet between $0.01 and $100 on each spin. Players change their bet by changing their coin value, number of coins and number of active paylines.
If you keep all ten paylines active, your minimum bet will be $0.10 instead. You can see your current bet on the status bar beneath the playing field.
Like Book of Dead, Scroll of Dead has a high variance. However, it also comes with a better payout! Book of Dead’s top prize was 5000x, while this slot pays 7500x your total stake.

Verdict
We did not expect much from this game. A slight change to the familiar Book of formula with improved payouts across the board.
That is exactly what we ended up getting. What we did underestimate is how interesting those few changes ended up being.
While it did not make this release a must play, it has certainly made it interesting to play. Scroll of Dead may not be a clone, but it certainly does not hide who inspired it.
We rate this release 3 out of 5 stars.
