Crypt of the Dead Review
The ‘book of’ slot formula has been one of the most widely successful gameplay loops in online slots. You would be hard pressed to find a software provider who did not make a version of the popular format.
Blueprint Gaming decided to try their luck with their latest title, Crypt of the Dead. Can this game stand out in a crowd of similar releases? Alternatively, will we forget about it as just another ‘book of’ clones?
- Highly volatile with 40,960x jackpot
- Book of Dead gameplay on a six-reel board
- Players can buy the free spins bonus
Great power still lies hidden beneath the dunes of Egypt. The bodies of ancient pharaohs rest alongside powerful and very valuable artifacts.
This online slot allows us to enter one of those forgotten tombs to uncover what lies within. The game has a high variance but allows you to win a top prize worth 40,960x your total stake.
Helping you on your journey to win big are free spins with a special expanding symbol.
Theme, Graphics and Sounds
We really like the background image in this release. It feels a little too zoomed in for our liking. Because of that, elements of the user interface end up blocking parts of the background.
Still, the two glowing cat statues offer a lovely mix between powerful and creepy. Activating free spins changes the background, opening an inner chamber filled with golden coins.
We have seen ancient Egypt themes that are more creative, but this one is reasonably good.
You play Crypt of the Dead on a six-reel, four-row board with 4096 ways to win. This is where the slot differs from many of its ‘book of’ competitors.
Land three or more matching icons in adjacent positions to win. Winning combinations have to start with the leftmost reel, or else their cash prize is not awarded.
In-game features
There are no real bonus features except for the free spins round.
Crypt of the Dead Free Spins
Find three or more Wild-Scatter symbols on the board to win free spins.
Three, four, five or six Wild-Scatters unlock ten, fifteen, twenty-five, or fifty free spins. During free spins, one icon is chosen to become a special expanding symbol.
This expanding icon will grow to cover all positions on the reels it appears in. It can also grant rewards from anywhere on the payline, and pays on every winline at once. It is possible to retrigger the bonus.
Another option players can use is outright buying free spins. Purchasing free spins grants you the same promotion as unlocking them manually.
You have to pay 100x your total stake up-front to get free spins. The number of Scatters that activates free spins is random. You could get three, four, five or six Scatters!

RTP, bet sizes and volatility
This game has an RTP of 95.49% when played normally, which is below the current industry average.
However, if you buy free spins, your RTP increases to 96%. Buying free spins is more optimal, but not everyone can afford the cost of doing so.
Players can bet between $0.10 and $5 on each spin.
Blueprint Gaming’s release has a high variance, and it shows. Solid wins are almost impossible to score.
Still, if you want to get that huge jackpot win, Crypt of the Dead is an excellent pick. After all, the luckiest players could walk away with a 40,960x jackpot!

Verdict
We enjoyed playing this slot, but your mileage may vary there. The only change it brings to the popular formula is the different playing field.
Unlike most ‘book of’ games, this one is played on a six-reel, four-row board with 4096 ways to win. The larger playing field means more chances to trigger the bonus.
The 40,960x jackpot is also much bigger than what Book of Dead offers. Personally, we think the jackpot is what really sets Crypt of the Dead apart from its competitors.
We rate this release 3 out of 5 stars. Not entirely original, but very promising and super fun.
