Towering Pays Excalibur Review
There is a growing tendency among providers to develop history-related games with a mystical feel to them. GamesLab has already dipped its toes in this genre with Towering Pays Valhalla, now making a triumphant return with Excalibur.
Enter the historic castle of Camelot and pull the mythical sword out of the stone to strike gold. A plethora of thrilling features are in store for you, granting you phenomenal opportunities to grab massive wins. Powered by Yggdrasil, this title packs a great punch.
- Medium-to-high volatility with a maximum win of 6,500x your stake
- 15-65 paylines
- Numerous bonuses, Prize Multiplier, the Feature Wheel, and more
The high-quality graphics are expressed via dark and cold colors, adding to the mystical sense you get while playing the online slot. The appropriately historical soundtrack follows the action, and while pretty good, the entire audiovisual impression is nothing special.
There are more than enough various features to keep you thoroughly entertained on your quest for 6,500x your wager. Medium-to-high volatility should appeal to high rollers and modest players equally. Maybe this is not the best game ever produced, but multiple interesting features will indubitably have their fans.
Theme, Graphics and Sounds
The design is related to the Arthurian legend, with a castle in the background, surrounded by water and a meadow. It is nothing unexpected from a casino game connected to this mythical place, along with an orchestral soundtrack.
The game is openly ambitious, but it does not deliver entirely. It seeks to appeal to every player with its medium-to-high variance but, while worth playing, it is not the best game ever conceived. Let us take a closer look at the paytable.
The action takes place on a 5×3 game board that expands to 5×8 during the Towering Pays feature, with 15-65 paylines. You need to land three to five matching symbols on adjacent reels to grab a win.
The lower end of the paytable belongs to the four card suits, awarding you 0.6x-0.8x the bet for a five-of-a-kind win. Red, yellow and orange emblems are mid-tier symbols, while purple, turquoise and green emblems are the most lucrative. They are worth 1x-6x the bet.
The golden Arthur is a Wild symbol, replacing all the regular icons and granting you 10x the stake. You can also land the Wheel, the Shield and Excalibur icons, triggering appropriate features.
In-game features
The Excalibur symbol can appear on the first three reels in the Normal, Lancelot and Merlin mode. It can land on the fourth one in the Camelot and Arthur features and on all five if you have the entire setup in the Camelot feature.
When Excalibur lands, the whole reel will show the same symbol, guaranteeing wins. The Stage Play feature has the initial 5×3 setup expanded, giving you an extra row and ten paylines whenever you land Excalibur on every reel.
The procedure repeats until you get to eight rows and sixty-five paylines. Every winning spin can trigger a random Multiplier, which carries the values 2x-10x, depending on the board size.
The Feature Wheel triggers when you land three wheels on reels one, three and five. You will spin the wheel and have different possibilities depending on what you land. You can activate a better feature wheel, win spins or various Free Spins.
If you have the Quest Bet activated (for 15x the stake), it can trigger the Hold and Spin feature. You can also trigger it when you land six or more shields, with additional symbols expanding the board and awarding three extra spins. If you fill all the positions, you receive an instant cash payout of 1,000x the stake.
If you manage to land at least one Excalibur on each reel when the board is fully expanded, the Avalon feature activates. It consists of a wheel with different features, including wheel upgrades, Free Spins, Win Spins or Hold&Spin if Quest Bet is activated.
Every Win Spin has the Excalibur on the first three reels, with the rest spinning and guaranteeing a win.
Towering Pays Excalibur Free Spins
There are four different Free Spins in the game, each granting you six in the beginning, with an extra spin for every Excalibur you land. In Lancelot and Merlin Free Spins, Excalibur can land on the first three reels.
Merlin guarantees a Multiplier on each win. In Arthur and Camelot Free Spins, Excalibur can appear on the first four reels, and in Camelot, it can land on all reels if the board is full-sized.
The Bonus Buy feature provides two options. You can win Wheel Upgrades, Lancelot Spins or Win Spins for 50x the bet. Moreover, for 80x the stake, you can win Merlin Spins.

RTP, bet sizes and volatility
The game provides the RTP below the industry standard of 95.58%, but it has a hit frequency of 64%. It guarantees frequent yet not-so-handsome payouts.
There are multiple betting options, varying from $0.25 to $25. You can adjust the parameters in the game menu as it suits you and play the game according to your budget.
The volatility is medium-to-high, with decent winning possibilities. Although Towering Pays Excalibur is a thrilling game, you will not experience many adrenaline-rushing moments.
The creators have developed it to attract high rollers and modest customers, but its numerous features and a maximum win of 6,500x provide great entertainment.

Verdict
Towering Pays Excalibur is a game that has a lot to offer, but many features are ultimately redundant. It is sometimes hard to keep up in such a feature-packed game, so many parts of it overstay their welcome.
It is a decent effort, but it wants to achieve too much and ultimately does not achieve enough. Despite many good things, it comes across as convoluted and overly ambitious. We rate it 3 out of 5 stars.
