RegionsMichigan woman finds $3.9 million lottery prize in her spam
Published: January 30, 2025
Not everything that finds its way to your spam folder is actually junk. A Michigan woman learned that you didn’t need a Nigerian prince to become a millionaire. Instead, an email from the Michigan Lottery can do the job.
Laura Spears from Detroit won a $3.9 million Mega Millions jackpot on New Year’s Eve. The regular jackpot was $1.3 million, while the optional multiplier tripled her prize.
However, the lucky woman was completely unaware of her winnings until she received a mail from the Michigan Lottery. She bought the winning ticket online after seeing an ad for the draw on Facebook.
The seven-figure payout means the 55-year-old from Oakland County is about to retire early. Her plans also include sharing her fortune with her family.
Spears has also added the Michigan Lottery to the safe sender lists, just in case she wins another jackpot in the future.
To win a Mega Millions jackpot, a player needs to select five numbers between 1 and 70 and an extra number between 1 and 25 for the Mega Ball. The actual odds of hitting the main prize are 1 in 302.6 million.
Available prizes range from as low as $2.5 for matching the Mega Ball and can reach $1.3 million for matching the first five numbers.
About Mega Millions
Mega Millions is a lottery game offered in 45 US states, the District of Columbia, and the US Virgin Islands. The first drawing took place in 2002, and initially, it was available in only six states. Drawings are held every week on Tuesday and Friday.
The largest Mega Millions prize in history was drawn on October 23, 2018, worth $1.936 billion. The ticket was sold in South Carolina, while an anonymous winner claimed the jackpot a couple of months later.
Most online casinos don’t feature lotteries, but jackpot slots are a great alternative. These online slots pay up to millions of dollars.
