Big Fin Bay Review
They say imitation is the highest form of flattery. If that is the case, then Thunderkick’s online slot is no doubt on a quest to praise several influential games.
It does not hide what titles inspired its theme and gameplay design. Is there more to this release than the slots that initially inspired it?
- Intentionally retro design
- 15,040x jackpot
- Thunderkick’s own take on Megaways
Big Fin Bay is far from the most original title on the market. The theme and visual design are very reminiscent of Fishin’ Frenzy.
All the action takes place above water this time around, which makes for a better view. Meanwhile, its gameplay draws heavy inspiration from the popular Megaways format.
Both ideas are given a new, unique spin that help set this game apart from its competitors. If that is not enough, the 15,040x jackpot helps seal the deal.
Theme, Graphics and Sounds
Graphics that look intentionally older than they are tends to be hit or miss for people. We personally prefer modern visuals that fully utilize the more powerful hardware we have.
Despite that, Thunderkick makes the visual style work. We get a gorgeous view of a city coast, with beautiful white houses littering the horizon.
It definitely looks like the sort of place we would want to enjoy our summer vacation.
The release is played with six-reels, with the height of each reel shifting around as you spin.
However, the number of active paylines always stays at 5040 ways to win, although that can be increased during special features.
In order to win, you need three or more matching symbols next to one another, starting with the leftmost reel.
All winning combinations must meet these conditions, or their cash prize will not be granted.
In-game features
Wilds in Big Fin Bay help you form wins by substituting for any other pay icon. However, they have an extra benefit on top of that.
If a Wild is part of a winning combination, it will expand to cover the entire reel it is occupying.
Wilds are also a major part of the randomly activated Mystery Wilds special feature. Every base game spin has a chance of turning up to three reels completely Wild. The effect only lasts for the current spin.
Big Fin Bay Free Spins
Three or more Scatters landing anywhere on the playing field will unlock six free spins. It is possible to reactivate the bonus, granting additional spins.
The number of free spins you can retrigger is limited. You can play a maximum of thirty-six free spins with a single bonus activation.
The expanding Wild effect is carried over from normal gameplay and grants a single re-spin.
During the re-spin, extra Wild symbols are added to the Wild reel. The unique benefit of free spins is that expanded reels do not reset between turns.
This allows them to stay up for longer and create additional wins. Furthermore, fully expanding a reel grants three more free spins and unlocks additional ways to win.
If all reels reach the full seven-icon height, you can play with 117,649 ways to win.

Verdict
We came into Big Fin Bay expecting the worst. However, we are happy to report that other titles served as nothing but inspiration for this slot.
The software providers went in their own direction, both visually and in gameplay. While there are similarities to Megaways, the software provider puts their own spin on things.
It leaves us with an excellent game that checks all our boxes. We rate this release 5 out of 5 stars. Fantastic work as always from Thunderkick studios!
