Hot Gems Review
Glimmering gems have captured the imaginations of many people. However, the prohibitive pricing on many of them leads to most of us simply admiring them from afar.
Of course, one man decided he was not going to let something like that bring him down. Deep within the mines, he works hard to mine the prettiest, most valuable gemstones he can find.
If you help him, he might just toss a few of them your way, too! Should you take the deal Hot Gems is offering?
- Medium volatility with a 5,000x jackpot
- Twenty-five fixed paylines
- Notable special features include collapsing reels, free spins, and a win multiplier
Get your pickaxe and practice your mining songs, because we are going gem mining. Players will have the opportunity to load up mine carts full of gems: if Lady Luck helps you find them, that is.
If you plan to go mining for big wins, you will need some assistance. Fortunately, Playtech loaded us up bonuses that will help up grab that 5,000x top prize. Collapsing reels, free spins, and a win multiplier are all essential if you hope to land a big win.
Theme, Graphics and Sounds
Given that the online slot launched in 2012, we are pleasantly surprised by how well it holds up. Some expectations have to be tempered. There is no detailed background here, nor are there any fancy animations as we see in today’s games.
However, the symbol designs still look quite nice. One thing we would recommend for all players to do is to turn the sound off. The song gets repetitive very quickly.
You play this release on a five-reel, three-row board with twenty-five fixed paylines. Casino members cannot turn off individual paylines to lower their total bet further.
You win by finding three matching icons next to one another, following an active payline. Winning combinations must start with the leftmost reel, or you will not receive the prize.
In-game features
Collapsing reels are in effect during both regular gameplay and free spins. After a win happens, winning symbols are removed from the board.
Existing icons will fall to fill in any empty spaces. Meanwhile, brand new symbols will appear from the top to ensure the reels are filled.
Once the reels are refilled, you will receive any new prizes created by the icons being shuffled around. Players can keep landing winning combinations using this feature with no limit.
Hot Gems Free Spins
Find three Scatters on the first, third and fifth reel simultaneously to win fifteen free spins. Free spins cannot be retriggered.
During the bonus, collapsing reels and a win multiplier are in effect. Collapsing reels function the same way they do during normal gameplay.
Every free spins round starts with the win multiplier being set to one. The multiplier increases by one every time a winning combination causes the reels to collapse.
The more collapses occur, the higher the win multiplier climbs. It can reach a maximum value of 5x. The multiplier value resets between free spins.

Verdict
Overall, we enjoyed playing this Playtech release. Despite being somewhat dated, the gameplay loop holds up quite well. The visuals could benefit from a slight upgrade, but we have seen far worse than this.
We rate Hot Gems 4 out of 5 stars. It is not perfect, but it will keep you glued to your seats for hours on end.
