Great Canadian Gaming Has Contingency Plans for Potential Ontario Strikes
Great Canadian Gaming continues negotiations with Unifor, a union representing workers at eight Ontario casinos, but has nevertheless prepared contingency plans.
The move follows the union’s decision to strike if the new deal is not reached by midnight on Friday.
In case the strike happens, the company has plans to continue operations. However, there is no detailed information on the plans.
According to Unifor, most issues have been resolved, although negotiations still continue.
Six Great Canadian Gaming casinos will go on strike on Saturday if an agreement is not reached. These properties are Casino Woodbine in Etobicoke, Great Blue Heron Casino in Port Perry, Casino Ajax, Pickering Casino Resort, Shorelines Casino Peterborough, Shorelines Casino Thousand Islands in Gananoque, Elements Casino Mohawk in Milton, and Elements Casino Brantford.

Currently, Unifor has more than 2,000 unionized employees, ready to go on strike if the new deal is not reached. The ongoing negotiations are focused on wages, pensions, benefits, and converting part-time to full-time jobs.
Unifor is the country’s largest union covering the private sector. It represents more than 315,000 workers from all areas of the Canadian economy. Unifor officials stated that casino workers had successfully recovered from the pandemic, with the union’s goal now being to share some of the gains with employees.
Local 54 Unite Here casino union made a similar move in Atlantic City. In June, the union threatened with a strike on July 4, requesting a settlement with the city’s properties. Luckily for Atlantic City, the strike was avoided after casinos reached a deal with workers. The union later ratified the new agreements.
However, two New Jersey locations have yet to settle the issue. Golden Nugget and Resorts are close to inking a new agreement, with July 30 being the strike deadline.
