The developers from Play ’n Go draw their inspiration from the works of H.P. Lovecraft, and his fictional universe called the Cthulhu Mythos. This mysterious world is where Rich Wild is heading in this game, ready to show that no dangers can stop him.
The renowned developer made sure the online slot was filled with features. In addition to cascade wins, there are special Wilds, two exciting features and a Free Spins round. Combine these features with the title’s high variance, and you can look forward to grabbing prizes of up to 2,000x the stake.
Theme, Graphics and Sounds
In terms of visuals, the casino game has a magical appearance, mesmerizing players from the first spin. Set in the mystical world of Cthulhu, you’ll encounter brightly-coloured stones that fill the positions on the grid together with symbols like golden rings, skulls, pendants and others.
Every good game needs beautiful surroundings to immerse players, and in the case of Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness, the developers did a great job setting up the right atmosphere.
The 2019 release is played on a grid consisting of five reels and five rows. The game uses the Cluster Pays system, with four more matching symbols creating a winning combination.
They must be connected vertically or horizontally and are followed by cascade wins. Winning symbols are removed, and new ones drop into empty positions, which can lead to consecutive wins within a single spin.
In-game features
Special positions known as Eye Marks randomly appear during the game. Landing a win on these tiles adds two special Wilds during the subsequent losing cascade.
Players fill the Portal Meter, which can later trigger additional modifiers and several features. Keep in mind that a losing cascade resets the meter. Here’s what’s on offer:
- Seven symbols award two special Wilds.
- Fourteen symbols award two special Wilds, while any winning combination that includes them triggers the Abyss Portal Effect feature.
- Twenty-seven symbols award two special Wilds, while any winning combination that includes a special Wild unlocks the Void Portal Effect feature.
- Forty-two symbols activate the Free Spins round.
Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness Free Spins
Filling the meter with forty-two symbols will unlock Free Spins (also called Other World Free Round). Players receive one free round with three random Portal Effects.
For every three winning symbols you collect, you’ll get an extra Portal Effect, although you won’t be able to claim more than seven of them.
Here’s what the Portal Effect offers to slot enthusiasts:
- Special Wilds – four special Wilds are added to the reels.
- Abyss – in addition to four special Wilds, the Abyss Portal Effect feature is activated when any of them forms a win.
- Void – it works in the same way as Abyss, although the triggered feature is the Void Portal Effect.
Mega Wilds come into play during the bonus. Open all Eye Mark positions, and the Mega Wild Cthulhu will be added to the main playing area. With each cascade, it will move down until it falls out of view.
RTP, bet sizes and volatility
The default RTP for this release featuring Rich Wilde is 95.59%. That’s a bit lower than the current industry standard of 96%.
A stake of just $0.10 is enough to get the reels spinning. On the other hand, the maximum amount of money you can wager is $100 per spin.
Tome of Madness is a highly volatile slot. In practice, this means players won’t claim wins often, although they’ll definitely be worth waiting for. However, the maximum payout of 2,000x the stake is not a suitable reward for tackling the game’s nature.

Verdict
Tome of Madness resembles another popular Play’n GO title, Reactoonz, but also adds elements from other releases. The game’s concept is to fill the meter by forming consecutive wins.
That way, players trigger features and bonuses. Although Rich Wilde this time brings a highly volatile experience, the top jackpot fails to match it.
All in all, it’s a high-quality release and equally exciting as other titles starring the famous explorer.
