Ways of the Qilin Review
Tackling Chinese mythology is nothing new for PG Soft. However, they are more than willing to go in-depth with topics other developers have not explored. Such is the case with this slot, which teaches us about the mystical qilin.
Now, these creatures are explored up close and personal in Ways of the Qilin. Will PG Soft’s latest game be a good introduction for these creatures of legend? Will their arrival bring us the lucrative wins we seek?
- High variance with a 7106x jackpot
- Up to 46,565 ways to win
- Players benefit from cascading reels, Wild bonuses, and free spins
It is said that qilin only appears before those who are wise and benevolent. Those who are pure of heart and have the wisdom required to rule. If you come seeking their aid, they will point you towards the various special features this release offers.
Cascading reel and Wilds on the Way are fantastic bonuses and can be paired with free spins. If you use them together, this highly volatile release could pay up to 7106x your total stake.
Theme, Graphics and Sounds
When done right, Chinese mythology makes for a fantastic slot theme. Fortunately for us, PG Soft’s experience ensures Ways of the Qilin gets it right.
The developer gives us a plenty of thematic symbols to explore, as well as a pretty background image. The slot is designed to be played on phones in portrait mode. As such, the background is not as detailed as we might see in other games.
You play this online slot on a six-reel board. Each reel can contain between two to six icons. This means that you could be playing every round with up to 46,565 ways to win.
The exact number of paylines and number of rows will vary. However, you still need three or more identical symbols in adjacent positions to form a winning combination.
These icons have to start with the leftmost reel, or the associated cash prize will not be paid.
In-game features
Cascading reels are active at all times. Winning symbols are removed from the playing field and existing icons fall down to take their place.
New symbols will then fall from the top of the screen to fill in any leftover gaps. This continues until no new winning combinations are possible.
Cascading reels allow players to score several wins for the price of a single round. A very useful bonus to have!
Wilds on the Way is a special modifier that affects random icons during both normal gameplay and free spins.
Affected symbols will appear with a silver frame around them. Affected icons can only appear on reels two, three, four, and five.
If the affected symbols become part of a win, they transform into a random icon from the paytable. They will also feature a new golden border around the transformed symbols.
If these icons are part of a win again, they complete their final transformation. They become Wilds, drastically increasing the player’s chances of winning.
Ways of the Qilin Free Spins
Four or more Scatters anywhere on the board will award five free spins. Each Scatter symbol on the board will also reveal an extra prize.
These additional prizes include more free spins or a multiplier increase. Once all extra free spins and modifiers are added up, the free spins round begins.
Cascading reels are active during free spins, and they have become even more valuable. Each cascade increases your win multiplier by one. Players can also win additional free spins by finding +1 icons on the playing field.

Verdict
If you play games on your phone, then you will appreciate the way PG Soft designed this title. The slot’s portrait mode orientation does not stop it from looking visually distinct, which we really liked.
The numerous special features are the real stars of the show. They are what make that impressive top prize possible, after all!
If you like high variance and Megaways releases, we highly recommend playing Ways of the Qilin. We rate it 4 out of 5 stars.
