Africa X Up Review
It can be very easy to forget the size of Africa. The continent is massive and is home to many different animals and plants. In its sprawling savannahs lies an entirely different world to the one we are used to seeing.
A land where elephants, rhinos, and the African buffalo reign supreme. If you fancy a trip, you do not need to buy an expensive ticket.
You can just fire up Africa X Up, a fantastic online slot made by Microgaming and Alchemy Gaming. Can this duo bring the wonders of Africa to life?
- High volatility with a 30,000x jackpot
- 243 ways to win
- Available special features include free spins, multipliers, and bonus buys
The choice of theme is good, but what won us over were the fantastic visuals. The background looks nice and does not distract you from the playing field.
The board is where all the magic happens. At first glance, it might seem like a standard five-reel, three-row title.
However, the presence of free spins, multipliers, and expanded Wilds keeps things interesting. If that is not enough to win you over, the high variance and 30,000x top prize will!
Theme, Graphics and Sounds
The African savannah is not a new concept as far as themes go. That said, Alchemy Gaming’s artists did their best to make Africa X Up stand out. The background image is simple but beautiful.
We would honestly hang it above our walls if we could! The symbol designs are also quite good. They feature Africa’s most-known animals and traditional African warriors.
You play this slot on a five-reel, three-row board with 243 ways to win. The ways to win system does not have individual paylines.
Instead, winning combinations are formed by finding at least three matching icons. Symbols must be adjacent to one another and start with the leftmost reel to grant payouts.
Because of that, ways to win makes forming wins easier. However, it also means we cannot disable paylines to lower our total bet.
In-game features
Wilds can appear on any position on the board. Unique to this game is the fact Wilds cover the entire reel they appear on.
Land two Scatters on the playing field to earn an X Up token. As you collect tokens, you advance up the free spins multiplier meter.
Each new level you unlock increases the multiplier, up to a maximum of 25x.
This multiplier will then take effect when the free spins round is activated. If you achieve the maximum multiplier in the base game, it will trigger free spins.
The multipliers are stored to your current bet. That means you cannot increase the multiplier with small bets and then use it with a bigger wager.
Africa X Up Free Spins
Scatters can appear on reels two, three, and four during normal gameplay. You need all three Scatters to land simultaneously to activate free spins.
Players receive eight free spins to start with. Landing two Scatters during the bonus will award two additional free spins.
The multipliers earned during the base game are applied to free spins. You can keep collecting X Up tokens during free spins to keep increasing your multiplier.
Additionally, players can buy free spins whenever they want for a cash cost. Buying the special feature will award eight free spins as usual.
However, the cost of buying free spins is not static. The more X Up tokens you have collected, the lower the price will be.

RTP, bet sizes and volatility
The RTP for this release is 96.37%. However, it can be set lower, going down all the way to 92.1%. To avoid this, we recommend double-checking the RTP of Africa X Up.
You can bet between $0.30 and $21 on each spin.
With a bit of luck, you could take home a 30,000x top prize. However, you should not expect scoring such a huge jackpot to be easy. This slot has a high variance. Big wins are possible but can take ages to achieve.

Verdict
Honestly, we did not expect to love this game as much as we did. The cool visuals and theme choice were the first thing we noticed.
However, the special features were what kept us playing. Building up to a massive free spins round and then watching it play out was mesmerizing.
Especially knowing such an incredible top prize was waiting for us! We rate this release 4 out of 5 stars.
