Almighty Aztec Review
The mighty Quetzalcoatl returns in a new online slot adventure. Will he shine bright like the sun, or will he have to slither away in shame?
- Cool Aztec theme
- Aimed at casual audiences
- You can trigger free spins immediately by paying cash
The Aztecs and their impressive empire are frequently explored in casino games. However, rarely does a title focus on one specific deity.
Quetzalcoatl was the Aztec deity of wind and learning. We will need his blessing as we continue. To help land a satisfying prize and so we do not mess up the spelling of his name!
Available special features include expanding Wilds, randomly added Wilds, free spins and the buy bonus.
Theme, Graphics and Sounds
Many releases that borrow the Aztec aesthetic take themselves a bit too seriously.
Microgaming and Spin Play have opted for a more friendly design, which we like. This does not detract from the visuals in the slightest.
The background is very detailed, and Quetzalcoatl sits next to the reels. He will blink and shift positions, but is otherwise static.
That is the one downside of Almighty Aztec. The animations are not on the same level as its competitors.
Wins are granted by finding three or more matching symbols in adjacent positions. These winning icons must follow an active payline.
Unlike most other games, wins can be formed using both ways, not just left-to-right.
This release is played on a five-reel, three-row board with ten fixed paylines. All paylines are fixed, meaning we cannot turn them on or off at will.
In-game features
Every so often, Quetzalcoatl will assist his loyal followers. He will fly across the reels, leaving up to three Wilds on the playing field.
These Wilds can appear on reels two, three and four. They can also expand to cover the entire reel!
This is not exclusive to Wilds dropped by the wind god. All Wilds can expand to cover the entire reel they have landed on. Similarly, Wilds can only appear on reels two, three and four.
By comparison, Scatters can appear on all five reels. Get three, four or five Scatters to win five, eight or twelve free spins, respectively.
During free spins, expanding Wilds will become sticky. Once they cover the entire reel, they are frozen in place.
This means they cannot move until the bonus ends. You cannot retrigger free spins. If you want to play more, you will need to trigger them manually, or use the buy special feature.
The Buy bonus is available at all times. Players have the option of paying 50x their total bet to activate five free spins immediately.

RTP, bet sizes and volatility
The RTP for Almighty Aztec is 96.38%. If you are playing via the Buy bonus, it is slightly higher at 96.40%.
In both cases, the RTP is well above average when compared to other slots.
Players are given a wide range of bets. The minimum you can stake is $0.10 while the maximum goes up to $500 on each spin.
This will satisfy casual audiences while leaving the door open for high rollers and massive wagers.
However, we are not sure that high rollers will be interested. Microgaming and Spin Play have designed this game with a medium variance.
It matches well with its 500x max win. It is not a bad prize, but big win hunters will want more.
Verdict
You could play this release for hours, and not have any exciting stories to tell.
The special features are interesting, but feel too rare compared to other medium variance slots.
Is this a purposeful design decision to make you use the buy bonus more often? We cannot say for sure, but its effects are obvious.
Quetzalcoatl and Almighty Aztec only get 2 out of 5 stars. An average score fits perfectly with an average game.
