John Hunter and the Tomb of the Scarab Queen Review
Do you fancy a trip to Egypt? You are in luck, as John Hunter is looking for assistants to breach the Scarab Queen’s Tomb. Help him, and there is great treasure waiting for you.
At least, that is what he says. Is there any proof to the explorer’s claims, or will we only find dust instead of gold?
- 10,500x jackpot
- Money collect feature
- Underwhelming take on the ancient Egypt theme
Famous explorers seem to be all the rage among software providers. Pragmatic Play has John Hunter. Play’n GO have Rich Wilde. Microgaming has Jungle Jim.
It is easy to understand why, too. It allows developers to pick from a wide range of interesting settings.
Aztec temples, old Greek ruins and even ancient Egypt! Available special features include the Money Collect bonus and a free spins round.
Theme, Graphics and Sounds
It is a shame the developers did not lean into that strength some more. The symbol designs carry the theme rather well.
Unfortunately, the background image is non-existent. The reels cover the entirety of the screen. We have no idea why Pragmatic Play went that route.
Even more so considering they have a perfectly good background picture when you first launch the title!
You play this slot on a five-reel, three-row board. Players get twenty-five paylines, which you cannot switch on or off at will.
Wins are granted when you find three or more identical icons next to each other.
All winning combinations must start with the leftmost reel and follow at least one active payline. Otherwise, the relevant cash prize will not be awarded.
In-game features
Fortunately for us, the special features make up for the dull background image. Keep an eye out for the golden scarab.
It can appear on reels one, two, three and four. Each time it lands, it takes a random value from a pre-defined set.
These golden scarabs are the money symbol. However, the icons just appearing is not enough to win those attached prizes. Instead, you need to find one of five collect symbols on reel five.
If this was any other game, that would be the end of that bonus. Pragmatic Play surprised us by adding extra collect icons!
There is the standard collect, which just grants the cash prizes. On top of that, you have four extra collect symbols that come with attached bonuses. What are the extra goodies you can win?
- Extra credit collect – this collect icon is unique becomes it comes with a value of its own. This value is added to all money symbols on the screen. Then, these upgraded cash values are added together and granted as a prize!
- Multiplier collect – the multiplier collect boosts the value of all money icons with its attached multiplier. The multiplier goes up to 25x.
- Expanding collect – this is our personal favourite. Money symbols expand to cover their entire reels! These newly created money icons come with new random values. This boosts the payout, which players will obviously love.
- Re-spin collect – all money symbols on the playing field become sticky. Meanwhile, the rest of the reels spin one more time. Any newly collected money icons are added into the winning combination.
John Hunter and the Tomb of the Scarab Queen Free Spins
Land three Scatters to win eight free spins. Scatters can only appear on reels two, three and four.
The Money Collect bonus is active even during free spins. Any winning money symbol has its value added into a separate pot.
After free spins end, a re-spin is played. A giant money icon will cover reels one to four. The massive symbol’s value will be all the cash stored in the pot.
If a Collect lands on reels five during free spins, the bonus pot is granted to the player! Find three more Scatters to retrigger the special feature.

RTP, bet sizes and volatility
The RTP for John Hunter and the Tomb of the Scarab Queen is 96.5%. This is above the current industry average of 96%.
You can bet between $0.25 and $125 on each spin. Changing your bet is done by using the plus and minus keys on each side of the spin button.
We quite like this spread of wagers. It appeals to both casual and high roller audiences.
That is a very good idea considering this release has a medium variance. It is clearly aimed towards attracting a big audience.
Of course, big bets are not the only thing tempting big budget casino members to play this slot. The chance of winning 10,500x your total stake is too good to pass up!
Verdict
We only have two complaints to make about this game. First is the name. John Hunter and the Tomb of the Scarab Queen is too damn long!
The second one is the lackluster background image. We cannot deny these flaws. However, both are minor in the grand scheme of things.
Pragmatic Play’s release excels in all other areas that matter. We rate the slot 3 out of 5 stars. There is treasure buried beneath these reels. It is up to us to find it!
