Codex of Fortune Review
For most software providers, a poorly received slot is not terribly concerning. They see what elements did not work and remember this for their upcoming ideas.
However, NetEnt has always done things a little differently. After Turn Your Fortune failed to get people excited, the team went back to fix things up.
Because of that, Codex of Fortune might feel quite familiar to many players. Has the developer succeeded in fixing their mistakes, or is this online slot doomed to fall into obscurity?
- High volatility with a 10,000x jackpot
- Forty fixed paylines
- Players can enjoy re-spins, free spins, and the fortune wins bonuses
Fans of the Art Deco style featured in the original will be pretty happy to see it return in this release. The team was not shy about reusing assets.
They wanted to make it obvious this is a sequel to their previous slot. Even the special features are nigh on identical. Casino members benefit from re-spins and free spins once again.
The new addition to Codex of Fortune is the option to save keys. The math model is now more lucrative, able to produce wins up to 10,000x.
Theme, Graphics and Sounds
As was the case with Turn Your Fortune, there is no overarching theme here. If you really want to stretch it, you could pretend you are trying to crack some old safe.
Of course, the absent theme does not stop NetEnt from making it visually appealing. It is not the best-looking title ever produced by this developer. However, it is more than enough to draw in players and keep them invested.
You play this game on a five-reel, four-row board with forty fixed paylines. Since the number of paylines is unchangeable, we cannot lower our total bet below the minimum stake.
To form a win, players need three or more identical symbols in adjacent positions, which follow an active payline. Winning combinations must start with the leftmost reel, or the associated cash prize will not be paid.
In-game features
Find two Scatters on reels one, three or five to win the Fortune Re-spins bonus. During re-spins, you find collectable icons and use them to fill the meter.
Every time you fill the meter by five spaces, you move one step up the fortune wins bonus. Fortune wins always starts at level one and has to be progressed using keys.
Keys can also appear during re-spins, allowing you to upgrade the level of fortune wins. Upgrading the level increases payouts for all steps.
The bonus ends when no more keys or collectables appear or when twenty collectables have been found.
The new addition to this release is the option to save your keys. Any keys you do not use to upgrade your re-spins can be used during free spins. Saved keys are only kept for that bet value.
Codex of Fortune Free Spins
Three Scatters on reels one, three and five unlock free spins and re-spins. Re-spins are played first, and then free spins are played right after.
When you start playing free spins, you are offered to use any keys you have saved up. A maximum of three keys can be used for one free spins round.
How many free spins you get is determined by spinning the free spins wheel. You can win between seven and thirteen free spins.
During free spins, players can find collectable symbols that are used to fill up the meter. You can also find a special +10 collectable icon that fills the meter by ten spaces.
Every twenty spaces you fill moves you up by one step. You increase your levels using keys, just like re-spins.

RTP, bet sizes and volatility
Most of the time, slots have a fixed RTP value. However, that is not the case for Codex of Fortune. The RTP for this game ranges from 90.2% up to 98%.
To maximize your RTP, you want to save your keys for the free spins round. However, this minimizes your re-spin prizes, meaning you will need more money to spend while chasing big wins.
You can bet between $0.20 and $100 on each spin.
The top prize you can win from this release is an astounding 10,000x your total stake. This is a major upgrade over Turn Your Fortune, whose top prize was set to 2000x your wager.
That said, a bigger prize also means high volatility to match.

Verdict
We understand wanting to make the connection obvious, but we think NetEnt went too far. The two casino games look remarkably similar, and we are near certain some of the symbol designs are shared.
Even the gameplay is similar, though new additions and a higher variance improved the experience substantially.
We rate Codex of Fortune 4 out of 5 stars. It is good, but it still lacks that visual NetEnt charm their titles usually have.
