Fruit Shop Megaways Review
Following up on a classic is always a difficult task. Fortunately, NetEnt seems to be ready for the challenge! After succeeding with Dead or Alive 2 and Hotline 2, they try their luck with Fruit Shop Megaways.
Will we be celebrating another successful sequel, or will this title be a sour lemon?
- 10,000x jackpot
- Same theme with updated visuals
- Megaways mechanics
The best remasters never stray too far from the original. This is a lesson this slot takes to heart!
If you have not played the original in a while, you may think this is how it has always looked. Thankfully, NetEnt are not quite so lazy.
They have made subtle adjustments to both graphics and gameplay while accommodating for the inclusion of Megaways.
Let’s see if they have done a good job with this remake!
Theme, Graphics and Sounds
We had to open the original Fruit Shop because we could not tell the difference at first. However, a quick comparison between the two makes it obvious how much more vibrant the new game is.
The background image is larger. The clouds in the sky and the grass on the ground are now animated. The sequel also has the playful chirping of birds and a soundtrack keeping you company as you spin.
You play this release on a six-reel board. The height of each reel changes with every spin because of the Megaways system.
A reel can be between two to seven symbols tall with every spin. The number of available Megaways also changes accordingly.
The maximum number of active Megaways is 117,649 ways. Wins are granted by finding three or more matching icons in adjacent reels, starting with the leftmost reel.
In-game features
Landing a win with any of the medium win symbols activates free spins. How many extra turns you get depends on the winning icon and how many symbols were part of the win.
Fruit icons can grant a maximum of five free spins with a six-of-a-kind win. Once free spins are active, both medium and low-win symbols can grant additional free spins.
There does not seem to be a limit on how many free spins you can unlock while playing Fruit Shop Megaways.
One thing NetEnt did change in this slot is the multiplier. Previously, it was a 2x multiplier and tied to the Wild. Now, the multiplier can go up to 10x!
It starts at 1x once free spins begin, and increases by one each time a win happens. It further increases the value of activating free spins.

RTP, bet sizes and volatility
The RTP for this game is 96.06%. This is above the current industry average, but less than the original Fruit Shop. It had an RTP of 96.71%.
You can bet between $0.20 and $100 on each spin. Select the coin button on the user interface to change your wager. This will lead you to a separate screen, which lists all available stakes.
Click the bet you want to play, and then press spin to start. This spread of wagers will appeal to both casual audiences and high rollers.
While it has a lower RTP, it makes up that difference with a bigger jackpot. You can win 10,000x your total stake while playing this release.
An impressive payout, though not one that comes freely. Fruit Shop Megaways has a high volatility, which makes scoring the jackpot very difficult. Difficult, but not impossible!
Verdict
NetEnt have become synonymous with quality slots for good reason. Their team is talented, and knows exactly how to attract players.
The sequel is an upgrade in every aspect. The jackpot is bigger. The special features are more exciting, and are made even better with the inclusion of Megaways.
The spirit of the original graphics is preserved while improving them. The only downgrade is the RTP, which is something we can forgive.
We rate Fruit Shop Megaways 4 out of 5 stars.
