John Hunter and The Mayan Gods Review
Do the steaming jungles of Central America sound interesting to you? Join the adventurer John Hunter and earn some significant rewards on your journey to the temples in ancient Egypt.
John Hunter and the Mayan Gods offers:
- Expanding Wilds
- Free Spins
- Transforming Symbols
John Hunter and the Mayan Gods is a relatively new online slot on the market. Pragmatic Play released it in mid-December 2020 as a five-reel, three-row, ten pay-line slot.
At first sight, the game seems like it lacks extras. However, if you get more in-depth, you will see that this straightforward gameplay has some exciting surprises in store.
Most of all, players love this slot because of the progressive Free Spins round with transforming symbols. In continuance, you can find a detailed breakthrough of this mysterious online slot.
Themes, Graphics, and Sounds
As the name implies, the slot features a Mayan theme. The background displays a bright green jungle, whereas the reels are in an ancient gold temple frame.
The overall design highly resembles the famous Indiana Jones theme, with an exciting 1930s matinee soundtrack.
You can find the traditional J-A card scale, representing the lower-paying symbols. They can grant you up to 10x your stake for a combination of five.
You need three matching symbols starting from reel one to the right to form a winning combination.
The premiums consist of cups, knives, rings, the Quetzalcoatl dragon, a Mayan chief, and the main character, John Hunter.
The latest offers the most generous payout. You can earn 10x, 25x, or 50x for 3,4 and 5 John Hunter symbols on a pay line.
In-game Features
The gold Mayan mask represents the wild symbol that can substitute for all others. However, it only appears on the middle reels.
The wild symbol in John Hunter and the Mayan Gods plays a significant role because it triggers the Expanding Wilds feature.
When you form a winning combination that contains a wild, it will expand vertically. So, you will get an entire reel of wilds. You can get up to three wilds at the same time, meaning three full wild reels.
John Hunter and the Mayan Gods Free Spins
The Mayan Temple represents the scatter. You need at least three such symbols anywhere on the reels to trigger the round and get 12 free spins.
If you activate the feature with 3,4, or 5 scatters, you will get 2x, 20x, or 50x your stake payout, respectively.
What’s more, this is a progressive feature, meaning you can move upwards to six levels and get extra free spins.
You begin at level 1. If you land one wild during the round, you get one additional free spin and move to level 2, where goblet symbols transform into daggers.
Two wild symbols grant you three extra spins and move you two levels upwards, whereas three wilds provide five additional free spins and a level increase of three.
At level 3, daggers transform into rings. At level 4, the slot splits all symbols on the reels into three.
The next level substitutes the rings with the Quetzalcoatl dragon symbols, whereas the final, level 6, transforms all Mayan chief symbols into John Hunter characters.
In other words, each level transforms the symbols into the next higher-paying ones from the paytable. In turn, you can convert all characters on the screen with the John Hunter one.
You can also retrigger the Free Spins feature if you land three or more scatters. At this point, you get 12 new spins. In theory, you can repeat this cycle forever.
