Retro Reels: Extreme Heat Review
Nostalgia is a powerful thing. As time goes on, we tend to forget the bad times we went through. It leaves us with plenty of positive memories of the good old days.
Microgaming is more than happy to let us relive the past. Is it as good as we remember it being?
- Pay to re-spin individual reels
- Thirty fixed paylines
- Old school theme
The more things change, the more they stay the same. Software providers know this better than anyone does. The iGaming industry has benefitted heavily from improving technology and better hardware.
Despite this, a portion of players enjoys the aesthetic of old and outdated physical machines.
Microgaming give us a happy medium between the two. Picking an old-school design, and crossing it with modern bonuses like paid re-spins and free spins rounds.
Theme, Graphics and Sounds
Retro Reels: Extreme Heat does its best to live up to its name. The top of the playing field is quite literally on fire.
Higher paying symbols are also depicted with flames, as are the Wild and Scatter icons. The only symbols spared from the inferno are golden bells, lemons and cherries.
The Wild is depicting as a dollar sign set on fire. Meanwhile, the Scatter has the words Free Spin Bonus written on a white background.
You play this slot on a five-reel, three-row board. There are thirty paylines total, which cannot be turned on or off.
Older versions of this online slot allowed you to toggle individual paylines when you wanted. However, this functionality has disappeared after the title was updated to HTML5. Making this retro release a bit less retro.
Players win by finding three or more matching icons in adjacent positions, starting with the leftmost reel.
In-game features
Retro Reels: Extreme Heat allows players to re-spin any reel. After spinning the reels, you will see a cost appear beneath each reel.
This tells you how much you will have to pay to spin that reel again. The cost of each reel re-spin depends on your wager as well as how valuable the reel is.
If it has a high chance of resulting in a win, the cost increases progressively. It is possible for a re-spin to cost more than your initial wager.
To activate a re-spin, simply click or tap on the reel you want to play. You cannot re-spin reels after playing free spins or after changing your bet.
Find three, four or five Scatters to win ten, fifteen or twenty free spins, respectively. While the bonus is active, all wins have their payouts doubled.
Players can retrigger the special feature by drawing three or more Scatters while free spins are being played. There does not seem to be a limit on how many times the bonus can be reactivated.

It also has a medium variance, which should please both casual and high roller casino members.
If you want to play this game at a online casino, we recommend you try out Videoslots Casino.
Verdict
The whole time we were playing this release, we kept wondering why it felt so familiar.
That is because Retro Reels Extreme Heat would serve as an inspiration for another Microgaming slot.
Wild Orient offers an almost identical experience. Both games have a similar RTP, and almost identical special features.
Ultimately, which of these two titles you end up choosing will come down to personal preference.
We give this release 3 out of 5 stars.
