Burning Desire Review
Few things can quench the Burning Desire of a casino member quite like a big win. Can this Microgaming online slot offer that, or is it fated to leave behind boring, grey ash?
- 243 ways to win
- Free spins with 3x multipliers
- 90,000 coin jackpot
Flames and gems have been a staple of slot games for as long as we can remember. Their importance has faded in modern titles, which prioritise cool themes for visuals.
However, older releases still keep them important. You need look no further than Microgaming’s Burning Desire for this.
The slot launched in 2009 and it is the epitome of old school. It has just two special features – free spins and the gamble bonus.
Theme, Graphics and Sounds
You can definitely tell this is an older casino game. The background image is very plain. It has some elaborate patterns at the top and bottom of the reels.
Apart from that, the background is a singular, dark red colour.
The reels offer a mix of playing card royals and other gambling symbols. Roses, bars, golden bells, lucky sevens and diamonds. All lit on fire, brimming with Burning Desire.
This release is very traditional with its gameplay design. The playing field has five reels, three rows and 243 ways to win.
As there are no individual paylines, we cannot turn them on or off at will. Wins require three or more matching icons next to one another.
Winning combinations must start with the leftmost reel, or their cash prize will not be granted.
In-game features
On any given win, there is a chance for the Gamble bonus to activate. This feature is not available if your win exceeds the gamble activation limit.
You can choose to play the special feature, or skip it by pressing collect.
You are taken to a separate screen, where you will see a facedown card. You need to either guess the card’s colour or suit correctly.
Pick the right colour, and your win is doubled. Choose the right suit, and it is quadrupled! Get it wrong, and you lose everything.
If you landed one or two wins and want to end the gamble, you can press collect to finish. Newer versions of this slot seem to have this special feature missing.
Land three, four or five Scatters to win fifteen free spins. During free spins, all wins are tripled.
It is possible to retrigger free spins, winning even more extra turns. There does not seem to be a limit on how many times you can retrigger the bonus, either.

RTP, bet sizes and volatility
The RTP for this game is 96.19%. This is above average when compared to the current industry average, which is 96%.
Players can bet between $0.25 and $250 on each spin. This is a massive spread of wagers.
This will allow both casual players and hard-core high rollers to play the way they like it.
This release has a medium variance. It carefully balances between frequent wins and huge jackpots.
It can offer a bit of both, provided you stay long enough to experience them! The top prize in Burning Desire is $90,000.
Verdict
Back in the day, this slot was the premium experience. We had fun revisiting it, but it is very much a product of its time.
It only has two bonuses, and one is not available for all versions. It could also use a visual update to make it attractive to modern audiences.
That said the core of this game is still good. Free spins are fun and lucrative, and it has an above average RTP.
As it currently stands, Burning Desire gets 3 out 5 stars total. Updated visuals would get it up to four stars, if Microgaming ever remasters the slot.
