Bonanza Megapays Review
It can be very difficult to follow-up on a successful online slot. Big Time Gaming seems to be up for the challenge with Bonanza Megapays. Will the addition of a progressive jackpot make this timeless classic even better than before?
- Four progressive jackpots
- Bonanza gameplay and special features are unchanged
- Slight visual update over the original
Few releases have had the same impact on the industry as Bonanza has. It was one of the first slots to introduce the Megaways mechanic.
Since then, it has left a huge impact on both players and software providers. Megaways are everywhere, and Bonanza has entered the slot hall of fame. Now, Big Time Gaming are reviving this player favourite, while adding on four progressive jackpots!
Theme, Graphics and Sounds
Players who enjoyed the original Bonanza will feel right at home. The background image has kept the same layout, but the visual upgrades are immediately obvious.
The plants are more vibrant than before. Everything is drawn at a higher resolution. Animations have been improved all across the board. Hats off to the team. They pulled off a visual upgrade without losing the soul of the original title.
You play this game on six reels with Megaways enabled. That means the height of each reel changes with every spin. The ways to win number also shifts in accordance to reel height.
The maximum number of ways to win active on a single spin is 117,649 ways to win. Wins are granted by finding at least three matching symbols in adjacent positions, starting with the leftmost reel.
In-game features
After every win, a Reaction will fire off. This will remove all winning icons from the board. Existing symbols will fall down and fill in any empty spots.
Meanwhile, brand new icons will land from the top of the reels. This allows players to score consecutive wins for the price of a single spin.
Find the word GOLD spelled out with Scatters to win twelve free spins. A progressive win multiplier is active during free spins.
The multiplier starts at 1x, and increases by one with each Reaction. The multiplier does not reset between free spins, allowing for some impressive wins! Land three or four more Scatters to win five or ten more free spins.
The new addition to this release are the Megapays. These are four progressive jackpots, which tick up with each bet made. The jackpot is granted randomly.
There are no prior conditions to meet. One spin you are in front of a mine. The next, you are standing in front of a luxurious hotel!
One symbol is chosen to be the Megapays icon. That symbol is then moved to the 6×7 grid and it is collected whenever it appears.
Collect enough Megapays to unlock different progressive jackpots. The more you collect, the better your top prize will be.
- 15+ symbols award the MEGA jackpot
- 12-14 symbols grant the MAJOR jackpot
- 8-11 symbols award the MIDI jackpot
- 4-7 symbols grant the MINI jackpot

RTP, bet sizes and volatility
The RTP for Bonanza Megapays is 96.40%. This is an upgrade over the original, which had an RTP of 96%.
However, more of the RTP is going into the progressive jackpot now. Your standard gameplay will be less lucrative to make room for incredible jackpot prizes!
You can bet between $0.20 and $30 on each spin. Use the left and right buttons on the user interface to change your bet. This is an okay spread of bets. Although, it is obviously somewhat restricted due to the progressive jackpot.
The mega jackpot is the most valuable prize you can take home. Without the progressive jackpot, the top prize for this slot is 12,000x.
Quite an impressive number, even if the progressive jackpot would have been sweeter. This is a high volatility game, so make sure to budget accordingly before you start playing!
Verdict
It is hard to believe that the original Bonanza launched so long ago. However, Big Time Gaming did not let such an iconic release slowly lose relevance.
Instead, they gave it a visual upgrade and added in a progressive jackpot. This is a potent combination when paired with the Megaways system.
Bonanza Megapays lives up to its name, no matter if you win the jackpot or not.
This is a fantastic slot, and a worthy successor to a timeless classic. We rate it 4 out of 5 stars – a well deserved score!
