Book of Oz Review
Microgaming’s Book of Oz takes you on a magical journey with Dorothy and the gang down the Yellow Brick Road. Will the Wizard take you all the way to Emerald City?
We’ll discuss that and more, in this Microgaming review.
- Endless individual reel re-spins
- Special reel-wide expanding symbols
- Dual-role wild scatter symbol
The Book of Oz is a 5-reel, 10-payline online slot game developed by Microgaming, in partnership with Triple Edge Studios.
It’s a visually stunning online slot filled with unique, interesting features. In this Microgaming review, we’ll take a look at the game’s theme, graphics, sounds, features and specs.
Theme, Graphics, and Sounds
The look and feel of the casino game is inspired by Frank L. Baum’s classic children’s novel and the subsequent film. From the interface to the symbols, it does a fair job of recreating a mystical, magical vibe.
Book of Oz features polished, glossy graphics with very attractive visual design. It’s a beautifully designed game, and a joy to play.
Every symbol is colorful, unique and distinctive. The graphics look sharp and crisp both on desktop and mobile.
In the audio department, the game features a mysterious, mystical soundtrack that makes for thrilling background music. Sound effects are rather quiet and unobtrusive.
Winning combinations include three to five low-tier symbols (10/J/Q/K/A) and two to five high-tier symbols.
In-Game Features
Book of Oz has a number of fascinating features, ranging from reel-specific re-spins to a dual-purpose scatter/wild symbol. We’ll briefly go over each of them below.
Reel Re-spins
One of this Microgaming slot’s most interesting in-game features are the reel re-spins. If you’ve ever wished you could change just one reel after a near-miss spin, this feature is for you.
Book of Oz will let you re-spin any reels, any number of times—for a price. The cost of re-spinning is variable and reel-specific, depending on the size of your potential winnings.
Expanding Symbols
Another exciting feature that Book of Oz has to offer are the expanding symbols. Here’s how they work. During winning free spin rounds, a random symbol is selected and expanded up and down the reel.
Matching symbols on any line will pay out. Expansions only take place when they would result in a win. Better yet, the process can re-trigger free spins, if scatter symbols expand.
Wild/Scatter Symbol
Last, but not least, the game features a unique dual-purpose symbol: the Book of Oz itself. The book symbol serves as both a scatter symbol and a wild symbol.
As a scatter symbol, 3-5 books will trigger 10-25 free spins. Meanwhile, as a wild symbol, the book can substitute all symbols.
Book of Oz Free Spins
If it’s free spins that you’re after, you need to be hunting for the titular Book of Oz. The book symbols trigger both payouts and an increasing number of free spin rounds.
Getting three to five book symbols will trigger a payout of between 1x and 100x your bet. Simultaneously, the books will trigger between 10 and 25 free spins.
Each free spin rounds’ stake will match your stake during the round that triggered the free spins. During free spins, a random symbol may be selected and expanded to fill its entire reel.
Symbols only expand if it would result in a win. Expanding symbols can re-trigger free spins.

This slot combines high volatility with a relatively average RTP of 96.31%.
The game has ten paylines, with wagers ranging from $0.01 to $25 per spin.
That makes it well-suited for both high rollers and gamblers on a budget.
The largest payout you can get out of Book of Oz is 5000x your stake.
Verdict
This slot machine features truly impressive visual design and a very polished interface. It’s strikingly modern—so much, in fact, it makes other slots feel dated by comparison.
With fascinating features like endless re-spins and the dual scatter/wild symbol, Book of Oz keeps you guessing.
The RTP is fairly average for the industry, though.
Overall, our final rating for Book of Oz is 4 out of 5 stars.
