Dragon Shard Review
The fate of the world is uncertain as a conflict brews between the Ice King and Fire Queen. Can Microgaming’s online slot match these high stakes, or will it fall short of player expectations?
- Win Booster special feature
- Can pay both ways
- Medium variance with 800x payout
Games have always been one of the best ways to explore a different world. With enough inspiration, our minds are more than capable of filling out the blanks.
The developers used this to their advantage when designing Dragon Shard. Special features such as Win Boosters, free spins with mystery reels and stacked symbols are ready to grant big wins. Are you lucky enough to get them all on your side?
Theme, Graphics and Sounds
If you like fantasy, we do not doubt you will enjoy this release. It fully embraces that identity, with magic and dragons everywhere.
The background image also gives us a very subtle fantasy vibe. Hats off to the artists at Microgaming, because their designs here are top notch!
The only thing not to our tastes are the playing card royals. Compared to everything else, they come across as somewhat dull.
You play Dragon Shard on a five-reel, five-row board. The slot has 40 paylines, which either pays left-to-right or both ways.
To win both ways, you need to activate the Win Booster special feature. Wins are awarded by landing three or more matching icons next to one another.
All winning combinations must follow an active payline, or else their cash prize will not be awarded.
In-game features
Unlike most bonuses, the Win Booster is not awarded randomly. You have to make a conscious choice as a player to turn it on.
When active, the Win Booster will allow you to win both left-to-right and right-to-left. It also enhances mystery symbols.
Standard mystery icons can reveal to form Wilds or any other symbol. With the Win Booster active, mystery icons can only become Wilds or high value symbols.
What is the price of unlocking all of these goodies? The cost of wagering is doubled. If you were betting $1 per spin, you will have to stake $2 per spin after toggling the Win Booster.
Three or more Scatters in any position will grant ten free spins. Each free spins round has a different amount of mystery reels.
They can appear on reels two, three and four. What determines the number of mystery reels? The number of Scatters used to activate the free spins round.
Three, four or five Scatters will award one, two or three mystery reels. As a little cherry on top of a delicious cake, each extra Scatter you land grants one more free spin.
Last on the list are stacked icons. All symbols can appear double stacked, except for the Fire Queen and Ice King.
These two icons are stacked five high, and are the only symbols to have this property. Not that we are complaining.
These are the two most valuable icons. If they appear even more stacked than other symbols, the chance of them landing a win is increased!

RTP, bet sizes and volatility
Dragon Shard has two set RTPs. If you are playing without Win Booster active, it has an RTP of 96.41%. With Win Booster active, the RTP increases to 96.77%. Both RTP values are above the current industry average.
Players can bet between $0.10 and $400 on each spin. This is an incredible spread of wagers. One that should please both casual casino members and high rollers.
This is a medium variance release, with a maximum win worth 800x your total stake.
This is an okay payout considering the volatility. We would be lying if we were not hoping for more. We would have accepted a slightly higher variance for a better maximum prize.

Verdict
Microgaming has come very close to making a perfect slot here. The setting is very cool, and the graphics do a great job of bringing it to life.
The gameplay is good on its own, but it is improved even further with Win Booster. Free spins with mystery reels has plenty of potential to form big wins.
However, all of that is hampered with an 800x jackpot. As such, we rate this game 4 out of 5 stars.
